iPhone in Kuwait.
I finally got my hands (literally) on an iPhone to see what all the fuss was about:
Some of the things I liked about the iPhone are: The screen is very clear; the contrast alone beats out any other electronic device I have ever seen. The menu system is easy to use and intuitive; you could easily learn to use it in a couple of minutes. The phone is the same size as my e61i, which is quite good for the screen size. The phones processor was fairly fast, you could easily switch between applications. The browser is easy to use and the dual-touch ability is extremely simple and effective, I was also a big fan of the tilting screen.
However, I probably would not get one at the moment for the following reasons: It doesn’t work in Kuwait, the one I used was ‘hacked’ and the phone options were disabled. We even tried putting a Wataniya and MTC sim card inside… no dice. The keypad is extremely annoying to use; apparently it gets easier over time, however the lack of tactile response (basically knowing that you pushed the button) is a huge shortfall. With the touchpad you must watch the screen while you type to confirm that you typed the correct letters, or even typed them at all.
Also, the lack of a PC-sync application and the ability to create third party apps is a big enough reason for me not to personally get the phone; or suggest it to a IT-minded person. I am aware that Programmers are currently developing software; but it will take time to fully mature into a solid application. The Symbian repository currently has thousands of third-party apps which is going to take the iPhone a long time to catch up. Not to mention the obvious shortcoming: fixed battery, no 3G and it’s made of glass.
Finally, the real features of the iPhone are useless outside of America; we do not have a central database of local business/restaurants, Google street-maps, cinema/airline listings, etc… So most of the navigational and converged features would be limited to the ones you have manually entered. As for the iPod features, I do not watch videos, listen to music or look at pictures on my phone, those features would probably go unused.
Overall… The iPhone a great device in terms of the interface and materials used, but as with the iPod, it just needs to go through a couple of generations before they get it perfected.
It was cool, but its missing a lot of functionality. I think that people are going to buy it when it comes out here in the Middle East.
it still can easily beat any mobile or portable device.

You say there’s no PC sync application, but I thought iPhone synced with iTunes for Windows (XP and Vista) as well as Mac OS X…!?
Magnus, synching is not just about movies and videos, u have contacts, e-mails, messages etc… to sync as well .. personally i don’t like the iphone but i think that the future version of it are going to be the ones to wait for.

The Review:
They are working on the unlock hack .. you are now able to use any cingular chip. However, I wouldn’t spend that much on a phone and then ‘hack’ it. When they release a software update .. you will be left with a paperweight.

Btw K, the unlock permanently unlocks the phone unless you perform a master reset (at which point you already have the unlock code anyways) - so the software update is not relevant in this topic.
Once the phone is unlocked, that’s it - end of story, just like any other ‘locked’ phone.
The Review:
Thats true If the phone was unlocked with the NCQU code; which is not available yet. People have been unable to find the unlock algorithm, as it can be quite cumbersome. A couple of brute force failures and the phone hard-locks itself to ATT. And I don’t expect Cingular to give it up anytime soon.
The most viable method of hacking the iPhone is to overwrite the firmware; which would be reset if you updated the iPhone. This is a similar method used on PSPs .. with every update you are back to square one.
IPhone will be available in Asia next year. There will be different versions for different regions.
So why not wait for it? Since a lot of changes would be made to it by then. Also LED-screen laptops will be issued soon by Apple. Including backlit trackpads. And other nice colorful eye-candy.

I have an entalaq 2 somewhere .. its a shame they don’t have the analog network anymore. People should definitely wait for the next couple of versions of the iPhone; i think there are going to be tons of changes in the future (awalhum 3g).

I suppose as you said its best to wait for future versions. I still have a generation 1 iPod, and boy is the difference HUGE between it and the newest video iPod. Apple listens to the people, and as long as ppl talk about what they want with the iPhone, Apple will find a way to add it as a feature.

I believe Kuwaits network is a bit more advanced .. the only feature the iPhone supports is Edge, which has been launched in Kuwait for a couple of years now.

Just to let you know the iphone is great, I live in the states and I have been using it for a few weeks now. only porblem is arabic messages but if you can live without tem then you should be fine
A hardware unlock was discovered a few days ago but it requires that you spend 4 hours to unlock it but once done it will be 100% unlocked and works with Watania and iti9alaat.
I will try to unlock mine to try it in kuwait in 2 weeks wish me luck
Ya jima3a..tara u can get an iphone from the US and activate it..you can use all the features on it, except calling. ya3ni music, videos, pics, wi-fi..search for a program called iActivator, and it will activate the iPhone without AT&T.
