New Kuwait Numbers.
06Mar07
MOC has realized that we are running out of numbers and announced that it will be adding an extra digit. The change should become clearer within the following weeks; from what I have heard:
Wataniya will add a 6
6123456 = 66123456
MTC will add a 9
9123456 = 99123456
Landlines will add a 2
5381234 = 25381234
Special numbers (starting with 1 or 8 ) will add a 1
107 = 1107
801801 = 1801801
Update:
This is the official news from the MOC, the change will be taking place on June 1st 2007:
تعميم من وزارة المواصلات:

What if a number starts with Zero?
What numbers start with 0?
00965
OK am a bit confused also,
Let us assume your number is 9123456 for example, by adding a 9, does that mean you will have two systems, one with 7 numbers and one with 8? That should be correct.
Then you have person A, lets call her Soso, has 9123456 and Person B, lets call her JoJo, has 99123456, right?
However, if it is just adding one more digit to existing numbers, then that makes no sense at all.
there aren’t any numbers that begin with 99 or 66
therefore 9123456 will now become 99123456
Before you would call 00 965 9123456
Now it will be 00 965 9 9123456
If it was a home line: 00 965 5381234
It would become: 00 965 2 5381234
Hehehehe my Uncle’s number is going to be the bomb then :s The other day we were talking about how lame the numbers are starting with 4 and 5 now :/ so they unified it LOL!
Let the, “oh sorry, wrong number…” season commence!
for realz?
there are numbers that begin with 66
i like my number the way it is why do they have to uglify everything!
why do they have to ruin it, special numbers like 777 and 112 or what ever should be kept intact, there is no point in adding a digit to it, besides dialing 777 is a hellish experience, adding a digit to it will only make thier job easy, and more people will die……!!!
just on the safe side 6123456 will be 66123456 or they will add a 02 to numbers in Kuwait city, 12in Jahra. 22 in other to be built cities…..?!?!
This sucks. 8 digits don’t look right.
Jacqui:
He should sell it! Numbers will be useless in a couple years.. and they changed it becuase they are running out, not because its lame.
3baid:
Nag9een .. at least it will throw off the people calling from Iraq asking for calling cards.
the11thmuse:
Your number would be 9900 .. its not that bad; my number would be ruined.
Exzombie:
We are running out of numbers! No city codes .. just adding an extra digit. when those run out; I believe they will shift to 3-#######.
B.:
Not to mention, 7 is much easier to memorize. There was a study done ages ago that proved that people would remember numbers in seven digits the easiest..
Although, Kuwait was 6 digits before the war .. they should have shifted to 8 digits then.
Still I don’t see how can adding an extra digit will solve the fact that we are running out of numbers.
Could you explain this part for me plz, I’m in a dumb mood today.
shosho:
Aren’t we all ..
Currently we have 7 digits; which allows for a possible 9,000,000 numbers. If we shift to 8 digits we will have a possible 90,000,000 numbers. landlines are currently using 2123456, 3123456, 4123456 and 5123456; Those will all become 2-2123456 and so on.
The prefixes of 3/4/5 will be free .. so when we need new numbers we can issue the 3-1000000 - 3-999999 and so on.
oohhh thats going to make the current numbers pretty damn ugly! I dont know how this is going to work out then.
I wonder how they will implement this, and how many screw ups they will have! hehehehe
crap.
well if you bought a gold / silver line it lost it value now
now i have to re edit all the numbers on my mobile
Oh man!
Wataniya are gonna mess up my new number…its starts with a 5….if they add a 6 its just gonna look shitty….!!! They should add 5’s to their numbers.
Hffff!
I don’t like this at all !!
make them stop !
Marzouq:
Many many screw ups .. tell all your loved ones to switch to gtalk or msn. It would make life that much easier. Numbers are dead .. everyone saves stuff in the phonebook now.
asmaa:
Yup.
forzaq8:
Value in mobile numbers is retarded … we will all be using usernames and emails within a couple years. I am going to make a database application that will automatically repair all the numbers in my phone book.
Delicately Realistic:
3,4,5 are reserved for future things (like the third mobile company).
DiiGMaa:
*claps hands* Hmm .. my powers aren’t working, I will try again in the morning.
shut up 77 is way cooler than 99! anywhoo!! shame on you dumbbugger! how dare you not wish me a happy birthday i’m celebrating this year! the entire month! not just the day! i’m expecting a phonecall and i’m also expecting you to sing “happy birthday”.. inzain KAY.. what’s the deal with the international number thing? i’m thinking of getting me one.. the one from british airways
the11thmuse:
My number would be 97 not 77 …
I don’t do birthdays, its cliche. And what does British airways have to do with numbers?
what’s pizza hut going to do ? change their tune to “2-2-4-6-5-0-5-0″ ?? it just doesnt work
joud:
Sometimes the only reason I order pizza from pizza hut is because I can’t remember the other numbers! Good point .. someone needs a new jingle.
how rude:P!.. its one number one sim card thats considered local in every country or something like that. I thought u’d know/have more info on it.. cause you know everything
Now we have to edit the contact list? :S min la khelg
Edit what?? shit man, never thought of that
i don’t like this..confusing
Going to have a silver line starting with quadruple 6.
Talk about value for money.
I got my number at 1997 and it was expensive at that time; it will no more look pretty! I want my money back!!
ooh no!
I think this is stupid…adding one digit will not be enough. They should do area codes, a 3 digit area codes.
Adding 1 digit will be confusing enough I think… Now imagine adding 3 digit area codes, that would be chaos!
How will they assign these area codes? Will they give each individual area a 3 digit code or will they group areas close together under the same 3 digit area code?
It’s bad enough going through my contacts and adding one digit let alone trying to go through every contact and adding its relevant area code…
Adding that one digit will create so many more numbers which will be enough for the foreseeable future…
I can see a silver lining in this for me.
My number starts with 965 and I get all kinds of calls from people trying to call a local number but adding 965 without realizing it is the country code.
That will stop. yippeeee.
Too bad for 5 prefix royal numbers
It’s a downgrade for them.
This is sooo stupid!
why don’t they come up with new numbers instead? 2012345\2112345\5212345 for example !!! =\
Having 8 number digit in a small country like this is a sign of “fra’3a”
I don’t wanna add an extra digit to my number
YEAHHH i heard!!…. its going to be weird…but sooner or later we’ll get used to it;)
My decidedly average number starts with 66, and now it will start with 666.
That is so metal. \m/
K.Kuwaiti, nice post. Hey, nice blog all together buddy. Your doing a great job. The funny thing is my wataniya number was 6623456 and the pager was 6123456, I sold them a few years ago. That was before you can transfer mobiles to pagers, I would of kept the pager if I knew.
Sorry, I meant if I knew you could transfer pagers to mobile numbers not the other way around.
I hope this addition may help since our landline despite of several complains wt personal visits have still left our phone dead since past 4 months! Just hope this change brings a relief to many landlines facing similar problem in Salmiya as complaints are of no use,not being attended to!! Rgds-Ema
My cellphone number will, let’s say, probably hit the 1000KD price tag.
Psychology and mind study proves tht human mind can store upto 7 numbers at a time -_-
All hail the innovation!
5arrrraaaaaa……ok they’re gonna add one more digit…bes not to the extend that the people (like me for example) who just got a new number have to pay the price by not having any freaking network coverage since a week ago up until NOW!! I have people to call and people who call me!! It’s even hard to go out if my phone doesn’t have any network coverage! IT’S NOT FAIR! I DEMAND AN END TO THIS CRAP!
