I have an issue with Kuwaiti ISPs dictating their own numbers for their DSL accounts. I had an issue a couple weeks ago with the FT customer care because their actual speed is much lower than advertised.

The following are realistic speeds and costs when comparing ISPs; as based on users submissions and talks with sales/customer care representatives at the respective ISPs.

The conclusion:

Worst Deal: Fasttelco 128kbps at .960Kd a kB a month.
Best deal: Qnet 512kbps and/org 1mbps (1024kbps) at .360KD a kB a month.
Fastest Internet: Zajil 2mbps (2048kbps) at 208.68 kBps (1671 kbps). Qualitynet does not offer a 2mbps (2048kbps) connection.
Qualitynet is giving their customers what they pay for, Zajil is close behind and, FT is charging more and offering less.

*Please keep in mind that this graph is based purely on cost (yearly subscription) and speed; this does not reflect any extra offers or customer service standards.

Great stuff, glad I’m with the lesser of 3 evils, they just need to get their customer support sorted and we’ll be that much closer.

  4. 4 geo

    does zajil offer residental dsl?

  5. 5 Purgatory

am happy with Quality and my connection and I am glad it is the best option.

I am happy to see FT sucked also, from what I heard they do not care about consumers and concentrate on companies, meaning they do not care about the simple Joey or Mary, they care about Big Al only.

    Yazeed:
Zajil is very good; although I had some slight issues with their service.

    Delicately Realistic:
    Thanks..

    Moodi:
Your right .. It does take them ages to answer the phone.

    geo:
    Zajil does offer residential DSL:
Call them at 822822; or check out http://store.zajil.com/retail/adsl_.aspx

    Purgatory:
Did you get stuck in traffic today?

    Marzouq:
Haha, I learned the hard way.

    Tweez: ;)
    Jackie:
    Fernando can hook you up.

    adorra:
    Thanks

    Maze:
    Thanks

    zaydoun:
    I have United Network in the original excel file, however;

    1. I couldn’t find anyone that actually has the service.
    2. I couldn’t find any pricelists/speeds offered.

I am very interested in including them in the comparison.

    K.. templatik ma 7ilo :(

My understanding according to the graph is that a 1 MB subscription to Qnet will actually give you a 1 MBps download speed? Is this correct? Because the episodes I download off of iTunes are usually between 300 - 450 MBs, so this would mean that if I had that subscription I can download a TV show in about 5 mins? Sounds too fast to be true.

    BLaSha:
    Suggest a new design idea .. ;)

    1001 Nights:
From the results; Qnet does give their customers what they pay for. But your math is a bit off .. 1MegaBit (1024) per second .. 8 bits is a byte .. so 1mb = 128 kBps.

The iTunes shows would download in roughly an hour.

    I’m using KEMS 1mb ADSL
    Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 768 / 1.280

  18. 18 zaydoun

K… Here is their price list

    http://www.unitednetworks.com.kw/consu-internet.shtml

I have a 512 Kb connection from them at home, and most of the time it’s great.

Oh about that karting pics.. were you there! i mean did u participate in that race!

  20. 20 huk

    hi

when u say 256kbps…does it mean the same given speed up and down ?
when u buy a 256kbps line for Qnet , your download speed is 512kbps.
is this the case for all providers and all speeds ?

    thanx

  21. 21 k

    zaydoun:
Their pricing is quite good compared to other isps; however, their service isn’t highly recommended by regular users. And I was unable to find any real world results for the speeds offered/delivered.

    huk:
No, Kuwaiti ISPs give you an upload speed at their discretion; expect it to be around 50% of your download speed.

  22. 22 shaknon

Very interesting.. hope to see more reports like this one.. maybe next time you could talk about The shownet satellite service - which can be used for downloading only - and its performance.. or maybe you could talk about the 3G services provided by WATANIYA or MTC-VODAFONE and how they are useless most of the time in the crowded areas.

Thanks again for this great report :)

Excellent comparison, Thanks a lot for the effort ..

Just as a heads up, internet in Kuwait is the most expensive in the world. It’s a total rip off, and if you think internet in this country is “good”, you really don’t know how it is in the west.

  25. 25 AbdulKareem

Oh and ISPS will tell you that the cost to maintain an ISP in the middle east is extremely expensive. The only thing that’s expensive is the fact that this country doesn’t have it’s own international backbones and relies on foreign backbones. Not only does it rely on it’s own backbones, but qualitynet for example is using the EMIX backbone which royally sucks, along with teleglobe (which is pretty good). If we had our own backbones we wouldn’t have this problem.

Besides that there’s no reason at all they can justify the EXTREMELY expensive, yet slow crap service we’re getting. For gods sake you have foreign labor (indians and egyptians doing all the physical work, laying the land lines etc.), WHAT’S EXPENSIVE?

Kuwait is soo behind in technology it’s sad, the whole middle east just sucks when it comes to Technology, everything’s expensive and never is the newest best thing.

When I look at the States, ISPS’s like COMCAST make me want to go into a corner, rip my hair out then cry a little. The price performance you get with foreign ISPS (USA, some european countries, and Japanese/chinese ISPS) is unbelievable. If you still don’t understand what i’m talking about or don’t believe me, just read about it a little, and you’ll soon see how ripped off we’re getting.

Ever wonder why there’s no FOREIGN ISP’S In KUWAIT? If there was I guarantee every middle eastern ISP in Kuwait would shut down after a few months; or go into a partnership with a foreign big name company; or be bought out. It’s that simple, the market is not going to open anytime soon because these Middle eastern ISP’S would not be able to compete at all.

Personally I want my money to go to the best company be it American, Indian, or Kuwaiti, not to middle eastern companies using the law as an excuse to hike up the prices, hire unqualified people, and give you a lousy service.

I have Zajil in my home, in Saudi. Most of the time, it does not work, and the helpline should be called “frustration line.” Once, the technician came after hours to fix the system, but said he would never do so again. I am not at home during the day. Which means that i paid for a service that does not deliver.
I am in Oryx Villa 58. Could someone please help? Kind regards.

  27. 27 Aziz

this information is outdated, would appreciate an update, you have no companies like Kems who offer 8mb home connection now.
