Blast from the Past.
Nibaq and I decided to go to Old Salmiya on Thursday.. He wanted to pick up some electronic stuff for his Diwaniya. Visiting Old Salmiya brought back some old memories. But alas, long gone are the days of kids’r'us and the countless hours spent scouring the streets of a time past. However, we were able to find some ‘artifacts’ of previous years.
Trapper Keepers:
Mogahwi still sells these things .. the same ones we used to get for school back in the mid-90s. The first guy refused to acknoledge their age (It had a Sonic logo on it .. Sonic!). Then the cashier was telling us about how they are the same ones from when he started working there in 1995. And apparently they are discounted, 1kd off (and you thought the 200kd would cause inflation).
Ice Cream / Pop Corn:
The stores underneath the stairs still exist .. and still sell the same old wares. Nibaq got chocolate ice cream (who remembers when we stopped getting them because of the Mad Cow disease?). I picked up the stale and tasteless popcorn .. the kind you get and then remember halfway to your car that it tastes bad and you want water .. yet you don’t get water and end up finishing it anyways.
Good times, good times. I am still annoyed with that Mogahwi guy, they discounted from 5kd to 4kd even thou they have had those things in their store for over 10 years.
Oh yes, the Kids R Us days were awesome. I bought my complete Voltron set from there…
I still frequent the old Salmiya market as I’ve also got some very cool childhood memories associated with the place. Also the Vimto slush you got under the stairs place was the best way to get brain freeze…

and does it smell like friday night? when u go off to mgahwey to finish off ur homeworks madre project ow ur parents are cursin u all the way for forgettin abt ur homeworks and rememberring them only 3 hours before bed time ;p ( it was 8 pm for me ;p)

The smell is different .. it has lost its touch (and is quite expensive now). The late night project worries; I would somehow convince my parents to let me ditch school the next day and work on it. As for the ice cream, we would usually get it on the way out.

- We’d beg the bus driver to stop, just so we could get a bit of ice cream. He never did though
seriously blast from the past. i think trapper keepers have to be in museums now. I had that ice cream not too long ago though, but not in kuwait. Weird thing is that i think its better than most of the stuff they have now. More fun to eat i guess.
mine never let me skip skool! GOD! thru out my “skool” yrs.. i only skipped one day in yr 1, 10 days in yr 5 cuz i had chicken pox, another day in 11th grade and 2 weeks in 5th yr in university ;p
